A dedicated crowd of around 35 music lovers—ranging from seasoned local veterans to Gen Z newcomers—gathered for an intimate night celebrating cross-generational shoegaze, ambient, and post-rock.

Free from high-profile scene staples like Enola, Fleuro, or Sunlotus, the showcase offered a rich, dreamlike spectrum of atmospheric soundscapes.

Experimental act Mathces-lab opened the evening with a data-driven ambient set. Using abstract pulses, electronic textures, and non-conventional sound structures, they immediately set an exploratory tone for the gig.

The atmosphere shifted as Hallvvay took the stage, injecting fast-paced modern alt-rock drenched in thick reverb and punchy distortion, channeling the late-90s spirit of Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones.

Malang shoegaze pioneers Intenna served as the night’s main anchor. Featuring their full current lineup—Ovan Z. and Dwianto Prastowo on guitars, Pugud Haidi A. on bass, Eddo Pradana E. on drums, and Dyan Rizki A. on vocals—they ran through cuts from their debut album Helter Skelter, ‘Go Right’ from the Flaw EP, and an unreleased new track.

Intenna demonstrated total mastery of the genre: dense guitar layers, heavy delay and reverb, and faint vocals dissolved in a swell of sound, turning feedback into pure emotional release.

Next came I’m Sorry, I’m Lost, an instrumental post-rock outfit that has become a vital fixture in the local scene. Relying heavily on material from their album 50:50, their set gracefully navigated quiet, contemplative lulls and massive walls of distortion.

Closing the night, Mesias delivered a crushing, melancholic blackgaze set. Dark, heavy, and visceral, their tormented vocals and oppressive distortion provided a heavy yet cathartic climax.

The energy inside the room proved that shoegaze and post-rock in Malang—and across East Java—are far more than a nostalgia trip or a passing trend. From the data-driven experimentation of Mathces-lab to the raw intensity of Mesias, these 30-odd fans proved that the local scene continues to celebrate itself, completely unbothered by mainstream trends. Malang’s shoegaze scene is alive, thriving, and steadily passing the torch to the next generation.
